Hutt Valley EMU Destination Signs

This page shows how the use of EMU destination signs in the Hutt Valley has changed over the years. I have taken the descriptions from the relevant public timetables - some are worded for up trains and some for down trains. See the Wellington electrified network schematic for route detail.

September 1953 ( EMUs to Taita; Upper Hutt trains via Melling )
3  Stops all stations
4  Does not stop at Kaiwharawhara, Ngauranga, Petone, Ava
file:///home/test1/oldhome/valleysignals/timetable/destinationsigns.html 5  Does not stop at Kaiwharawhara, Ngauranga
6  Does not stop at Kaiwharawhara, Ngauranga, Petone
7  Does not stop at Kaiwharawhara, Ngauranga, Petone, Ava, Woburn

I cannot find any "4" trains in the timetable.

October 1953 ( EMUs to Taita; Upper Hutt trains via Melling)
3  Taita, stop all stations
5  Taita, stop all stations except Kaiwharawhara and Ngauranga
8  Taita, stop all stations except Ngauranga

November 1953 (EMUs to Taita and Lower Hutt; Upper Hutt trains via Melling)
1   Lower Hutt stop all stations
3   Taita stop all stations
5   Non stop from Petone
6   Non stop from Ava
7   Non stop from Waterloo

Some Lower Hutt EMUs were non-stop to Petone. I do not know what destination sign, if any, they carried.

Trains also originated from Waterloo and Woburn. As these were probably locomotive hauled trains (must check) they did not carry a destination sign.

April 1954 (EMUs to Taita & Melling; Upper Hutt diesel trains via Taita)
1   Melling stop all stations
3   Taita Stop all stations
5   Taita Stop all stations except Kaiwharawhara, Ngauranga
6   Taita Stop all stations except Kaiwharawhara, Ngauranga, Petone

Trains also originated from Waterloo and Woburn. As these were probably locomotive hauled trains (must check) they did not carry a destination sign.

March 1955 (EMUs to Taita & Melling; Upper Hutt diesel trains via Taita)
5   Taita Stop all stations except Kaiwharawhara, Ngauranga
6   Taita Stop all stations except Kaiwharawhara, Ngauranga, Petone
8   Taita Stop all stations except Kaiwharawhara, Ngauranga, Ava

I cannot find any "6" trains in the timetable.

Trains also originated from Waterloo and Woburn. As these were probably locomotive hauled trains (must check) they did not carry a destination sign.

Compare "8" with October 1953. Presumably 1 & 3 are also used, but they are not listed.

July 1955 (Electric services to Taita and Upper Hutt)
1   Melling, stops all stations
3   Taita Stops all stations
5   Taita Stops all Stations except Kaiwharawhara and Ngauranga
6   Taita Stops all stations except Kaiwharawhara , Ngauranga & Petone
9   Upper Hutt Stops all stations
10   Upper Hutt. Restricted stops only.

Trains also originated from Waterloo and Woburn. As these were probably locomotive hauled trains (must check) they did not carry a destination sign.

November 1971
1   Melling, stops all stations
3   Taita Stops all stations
5   Taita Stops all Stations except Kaiwharawhara and Ngauranga
9   Upper Hutt Stops all stations
10   Upper Hutt. Restricted stops only.

Trains also originated from Waterloo and Woburn. As these were probably locomotive hauled trains (must check) they did not carry a destination sign.

One train did not stop at Kaiwharawhara, Ngauranga and Petone but the code ( 6?) is not listed in the timetable.

Notes
The codes are not listed in the 1980 timetable so their use was presumably discontinued sometime in the 1970s.

The codes suggest that when the Hutt Valley electrification was planned a quite complex set of services was proposed.
